Red Sister by Mark Lawrence
Red Sister, the first book in the Ancestor Trilogy by Mark Lawrence, is a captivating magical academy story filled with rivalry, combat and intrigue.
The novel follows Nona Grey, a nine-year-old peasant girl falsely accused of murder. After narrowly escaping persecution, she is taken to the Convent of Sweet Mercy—a school dedicated to training young girls to become deadly assassins.
I loved every bit of this book. It transports readers to a fascinating post-apocalyptic world infused with magical powers. Nona’s journey of resilience and strength, the rivalries she faces, and her personal growth kept me completely hooked. I couldn’t put the book down.
Lawrence’s evocative prose and distinctive style of writing are a highlight. One of my favourite quotes from the book is:
"I have been too young to know, and I have been too old to care. It’s in that oh so narrow slice between that memories are made."
Overall, I highly recommend Red Sister to anyone interested in fantasy and looking for a compelling read.
