Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind is one of the best books that I have ever read. This book has helped answer some of my biggest questions about the world, i.e., what brought us to the current state of the world? Why are humans dominating it? What has led to the current power dynamics between countries and races? If you want to explore these questions and gain a macro perspective on human history, you can’t miss this book.
This book summarises the 4-billion-year history of the world, along with the journey of humankind from the Stone Age to the 21st century. The major phases of human history are clearly explained, from the Cognitive Revolution and the Agricultural Revolution to the Unification of Humankind and the more recent Scientific Revolution. It also provides a comprehensive view of human progression, from our extinct hominid ancestors to modern humans (Homo sapiens). Another powerful insight it offers is an understanding of the roots of today’s world structures, including religion, political systems, trade networks and legal institutions.
I really enjoyed the ‘time travel’ experience of reading this book. It helps me observe the modern world and big global issues from a broader and more thoughtful perspective, equipping me with a better mindset to live in the present and think about the future. In today’s challenging world, where conflicts continue to arise at many levels, this book reminds me that many of these issues are rooted in human nature and have appeared throughout history.
If you’re looking to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of humankind and the world, this book will answer many of your questions. It’s truly an eye-opening read.
