Six of Crows

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows is a story that readers don't even realise they need until they pick up the book and delve into the intricate world of the Grishaverse. Bardugo understands that a book should be fun to read first and foremost, so the text portrays a detailed, elaborate heist plan that is impossible to put down. Though hidden under the surface are themes of poverty, class inequality, racism and prejudice. Its appeal is driven by a rich, 17th century world and a diverse cast that represents many races, backgrounds and sexualities.

This text is an extremely refreshing take on the fantasy genre, instead of chosen ones that need to save the world, the novel follows six underdogs who simply want to...get rich. However, this book is a character driven story. The author incites the reader to fall in love with the main characters through their likeable, dynamic, hilarious personalities and commentaries. The text delves into their backstories, and through the slow satisfying reveal of their personal struggles and conflicts, the reader develops a deep understanding of why they want the money and what drives them to make the decisions they make.

At the heart of the story is the message of found family, that everyone deserves to be loved, and love despite our flaws. I strongly recommend Young Adult book lovers to read this, as well as it’s sequel. Be warned that without reading Leigh Bardugo's previous novels, the magic system and world may be a little complex and difficult to understand at first. However, this should not dissuade you from picking up such a tightly written, heartwarming story.
