Soar

Soar by David McAllister

This is a memoir of one of Australia's ballet greats, both on stage and off stage. It takes us from one of Perth's backwaters to international stardom. His story starts as a young child living in Perth with his parents and siblings.

Always wanting to perform and dance in and out of people's lives, he finally persuaded his parents to enrol him in ballet lessons.

Always bullied at school - both physically and emotionally - he joined the Australian Ballet, worried that he would never become a principal dancer because of his lack of height and build.

But he did become a principal dancer, performed all his dream roles and fell in love both on stage and off stage with both female and male partners. Then he became the artistic director of the Australian Ballet, and under him, it became one of the top dance companies in the world.

It is an eye-opener on how one gets into the arts - well-written and frank, with great insight.
