The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren
The Summer Hikaru Died is a surreal, at times morbid, and at times extremely cute young adult series that focuses on the relationship between Yamato, his best friend Hikaru, and the monster that has replaced Hikaru. The creature that has become Hikaru possesses all his memories and imitates him as closely as possible in order to fit in; however, Yamato knows that something is different.
What I enjoyed most about this series are the emotional reflections and inner trials that Yamato experiences. Seeing his reactions to the things “Hikaru” does, alongside his flashbacks to the real Hikaru, makes the story much more engaging. The series is still ongoing and has an anime adaptation that is very faithful to the source material.
Overall, it is a somewhat comforting horror with strong coming‑of‑age elements. I would recommend it as a read that will stay with you.
