The Teacher DVD
Inspired by remarkable true events and directed by Jan Hřebejk, the setting of this film is the early 1980s in former Czechoslovakia.
A new term begins at a suburban high school. The new teacher, Maria Drazdechova, asks students to introduce themselves and also wants to know what their parents do for a living. After gathering this information, she begins to request various favors from the parents in exchange for special treatment of their children, particularly when it comes to grades.
The school principal and concerned parents realise they must take action against her unscrupulous and unacceptable behaviour. However, there’s one major obstacle: “Comrade Drazdechova” has strong connections with the ruling political party.
The Teacher received the following awards and recognition:
- 2016 Karlovy Vary Film Festival – Winner: Best Actress
- 2017 Slovak Film Awards – Winner: Best Film and Best Actress
- David Ehrlich, Chief Film Critic at IndieWire, calls this gripping film “brilliant.” I totally agree.
