The way of Nagomi: Live a Balanced and Harmonious Life the Japanese Way

The Way of Nagomi: Live a Balanced and Harmonious Life the Japanese Way by Ken Mogi

Do you want to maintain happy relationships in your life, learn new things while staying true to yourself, and find a sense of peace in whatever you do? Then Nagomi is the way forward for you. The international best-selling author of The Little Book of Ikigai, Ken Mogi, explores the concept of Nagomi through beautifully woven stories and life experiences in this book.

If you haven’t heard the word Nagomi (pronounced "na-go-mi"), it roughly means balance, comfort, and calmness of heart and mind. It can refer to your communication with others, your relationship with the environment, or your general state of mind when you are in harmony with yourself and the world at large. The author explains nine concepts of Nagomi in this book: Food, Relationships, Health, Lifelong Learning, Self, Creativity, Society, Life, and Nature. Nagomi is a way of life where you are in sync with yourself and the outside world.

Reading The Way of Nagomi was a fascinating experience for me. I liked some concepts more than others. My favorites were Food, Health, and Relationships. The best part is that this book itself is written in accordance with the ethos of Nagomi, so you need to be mindful and focused to capture its embedded nuances. Intricate Japanese stories and folklore, such as the story of “Shibahama,” the fisherman who found a wallet on the beach, are small gemstones scattered throughout the book.

The author explains that in the Nagomi of Food, establishing balance with your appetite can be one of the most effective health habits you can acquire. A wonderful example that illustrates important aspects of the Nagomi-based life is the Japanese concept of hara hachibu, which literally means "stomach 80 percent." It is the idea that you should stop eating before you are completely full—when you are still only 80 percent full. Furthermore, according to the Nagomi of Relationships, while individuals have their own values, each person is defined first and foremost by their relationships. In other words, the relationship itself is more important than anything else.

The Way of Nagomi is a beautifully written book that provides a broader perspective on the Nagomi way of life through stories and experiences. However, it is not an in-depth, step-by-step guide on how to apply Nagomi in daily life. Therefore, it may not appeal to everyone. But if you are interested in making positive changes and bringing more balance and calmness to your life, The Way of Nagomi by Ken Mogi will definitely provide an initial stepping stone.
